Some of the mistakes you can make when developing an app

Two Dam Creative

We at 2 Dam Creative are just about to make available an App eBook entitled ‘Top ten mistakes to avoid when developing an app.’ In the meantime, let’s have a look at a couple of the top mistakes we’ve identified as we’ve worked with apps.

Mistake 1:
Building your app without knowing that your app solves a problem

The most successful apps solve a problem – what does your problem solve? You can get closer to answering this question by asking yourself who your audience is and how your app improves their lives.

Mistake 2:
Building your app and THEN performing your market research

Begin your project with a solid base by performing primary and secondary research prior to even starting to develop your app. Primary research refers to interviews, surveys, questionnaires and focus groups to gather feedback. Secondary research involves analysing data from your competition and setting your own goals. The more data you can collect, the more informed your decisions will be as you build your app.

Mistake 3:
Setting unrealistic expectations about how long it takes to build an app

Although each app is different, you can expect to spend a minimum of 4 – 6 months building one. You need time to consider your branding, set your wireframes, come up with your designs, then development time. After this you also need to implement your marketing plan and complete your testing. It’s best to be realistic about how long each of these stages will take.
