Cyber security and cloud computing

This is a hot topic for all types of businesses. In recent weeks Governments have been making news headlines with accessing and securing official and non-official data and third party hosted content.

What does this mean for your business? Essentially, good practice is the key here. The following guidelines will assist you protecting your data and gaining the most from third party solutions.

  • Review your behaviour and processes, update passwords regularly. Consider using a password manager there are plenty to choose from LastPass, Dashlane, KeePass, 1Password, RoboForm etc.
  • The ‘cloud’ is the new norm.  Using third party cloud hosted arrangements can save time money and provide additional layers of security (most providers provide 24 hour monitoring – any unusual activity – like one IP address logging into multiple accounts would raise a red flag for investigation). In fact, most programs are moving to cloud hosted subscriptions now, Adobe, Microsoft, Google Apps – just to name a few.
  • Consider the need of storing sensitive information in the cloud and read and consider what the user agreements really mean. Take the time to read all that fine print. Yes, that means all of it.

  • Update and ensure your firewall has up to date security software, such as antivirus and antispyware. Ensure all of your protection measures, operating system and software, are up to date.
