App Engagement – The 10 Apps With the best User Experience, Part 1

Two Dam Creative

As we head towards EOFY 2016 I’ve been looking back at what I see as the apps that have the best User Experience.

It was a truly tumultuous and utterly fascinating year in which surprises lurked around every corner. Amidst the turmoil, the underdogs, winners, losers and certain real estate tycoons successfully navigating a change of career path, the world of technology evolved in ways that were just as fascinating.

The general consensus appears to be relief that the past financial year is very nearly over. As 2017/18 FY wipes the sleep from its eyes, finishes its first coffee before getting underway in earnest, we thought that we would take the opportunity to look back and assess which mobile apps gave us something special. Given that our passion is helping app developers to get the feedback that will help them improve their products, we decided to approach it from that angle. So, here is the first instalment of what we believe that some of the best advances in mobile user experience and user engagement for the last year. Some of them are new, some of them are improved. All of them have something to teach us about how we can engage with our users.

The ludicrously successful homestay app rolled out a serious makeover last year, and it’s fair to say that the crowd went wild. Aside from being downright beautiful, the app is subtly magnificent when it comes to nailing the user experience. The truly groundbreaking improvements are on the host side of the app, with super easy to use planning calendar and radically enhanced messaging features. However, the visitor site has also been streamlined and beautified, making navigation smooth and highly intuitive. We are very much on the bandwagon with this one.

Cricket Australia Live

We think this is one of the slickest sports apps we have seen. The major development of 2016 was the inclusion of live streaming as an in-app purchase option. The quality is exceptional and refreshing simple to use. For the less tragic, CA cram the app with high-quality videos, so that fans can catch up on all the highlights. The navigation has been significantly streamlined, allowing the faithful to access live updates, historical results and a variety of other information in precisely the way that suits them best. We’re proud to say that CA utilised Appee when researching possible UI enhancements to their app and received the feedback they needed to make the right decisions.

Day One 2

While not technically new, the redesign of the wonderful journaling app was so comprehensive that it might as well have been. Everything about this app is visually stunning and elegant. New features include vastly improved photo integration capability, the ability to maintain multiple journals simultaneously and incorporate location and weather info. The developers of this app worked really hard to give their users what they were looking for and turned a serviceable app into a work of art. We think that there is no better way to keep your memories alive.

That’s part 1 done and dusted! Stay tuned for the next instalment, coming soon!
