Are you experiencing #Mobilegeddon?

Two Dam Creative

‘Just Google it!’ Something we all probably say at least twice a day. These days, Google’s updated ‘algorithm’ will rank and reward sites that are mobile friendly.

So is your website experiencing #mobilegeddon because it is not responsive?

If you are – thumbs up – awesome – no change to your search engine results. If you aren’t – thumbs down – you will be sent to the naughty corner and your ranking on Google will drop so that you are below all of your competitors ‘mobile friendly’ sites.

So what do you do to ensure that when users ‘Google’ you, your site is still ranked favourably?

You need to ensure that your website, your most important digital asset, is responsive.

A responsive website means that your site responds to the device it is being viewed on. It also means that as new devices come on to the market, your site will automatically respond to that mobile device size, such as; phablets, smartphones, tablets and to some extent wearables.

By having a responsive website your content can be viewed and used on all smart phones and tablets and fit within device screens without losing functionality or display. A nice explainer article by Google provides a high-level oversight on responsive websites.

What has led the change to drive Google to insist on website owners to ensure their content is mobile friendly? Quite a few drivers, but essentially the days of customers only using desktop computers or laptops to view your website are gone. The trend of consumer preferences using mobile devices is increasing globally.

Look at the graph below, which shows that mobile devices in 2013 were aligned with desktop, then exceeded desktop use in 2014.
